Getting a reverse mortgage may sound like the answer to a homeowner’s financial issues. Instead of the homeowner paying the lender every month as in a conventional mortgage, in a reverse mortgage, the lender sends a monthly check to the home­owner.

Attendance at local first-time homebuyer education classes declined significantly last year, with nearly 25 percent fewer people participating, or 22 percent fewer households, compared with 2013 attendance, according to an annual report for the Home Buyers Round Table of Dane County, which largely pays for the program.
