Paying property taxes a concern?

GreenPath offers free non-profit help in Iowa and Illinois

(MOLINE, IL – May 12, 2013) - This is the time of year when property tax bills begin arriving in mailboxes throughout Rock Island County.  Recently, more local homeowners are finding themselves struggling to come up with the funds to address their property taxes.  Reduced income, unemployment, and rising prices for fuel and food, continue to take a toll on many Illinois homeowners.

The good news is that there is free, non-profit help available locally to homeowners concerned about their property tax, budget and debt situations through GreenPath Financial Wellness in Moline.

“In the last six months, we have seen a noticeable increase in the amount of borrowers coming to us for counseling on property tax issues,” says Bill Druliner, GreenPath’s area manager for the Midwest.  “Usually when people have trouble paying property taxes, it is a sign of broader financial struggles.”

The types of situations where property taxes can be an issue are varied.  Property taxes can be a serious issue for senior citizens, whose home is paid for but who are struggling to get by on a fixed income.  Other times it can be folks whose mortgage company does not escrow, or folks who are behind on their mortgage payments.  Sometimes landlords find themselves struggling to cover tax payments after the loss of tenants or unexpected expenses related to the properties.

“The worst thing that a homeowner can do is to stick their head in the sand, but many times folks feel overwhelmed and do not know where to turn for help,” said Kim Sands, Team Leader for GreenPath’s Moline office.  “The process can be intimidating – but it is possible to develop an action plan and get back on top of things.

For more information or to make an appointment for face-to-face counseling at GreenPath’s Moline office, located at 5306 Avenue of the Cities, Suite A, please call (309) 736-0160.  GreenPath is licensed to provide assistance for both Iowa and Illinois residents.
