The last year and a half of my life has been one constant struggle after another. In addition to starting divorce proceedings, and dealing with all of the emotional stress of a deteriorated marriage and separation, I found myself in a predicament that I wasn’t sure I could handle. While still married, we had lost our home and I was now a 31 year-old single mother of two left with nothing but my car and a large amount of credit card debt. While most of the purchases were made by my ex, all the credit cards had been issued in my name due to my good credit standing. So the cards were mine and so was the debt — $42,000 for things I no longer owned. How could I do it with my single income of under $30,000 a year?

I researched a lot of options. I spoke to different debt consolidation companies as well as debt settlement companies. It was all so messy and I always found myself frustrated by the people I spoke with. They promised that their “solution” would result in unrealistic outcomes, but never gave me clear information on how these miraculous results could be possible without the likelihood of future consequences. I was tired of calling companies that I felt were more interested in getting money from me than actually helping me.

That’s when I called GreenPath.

When they told me to schedule an appointment with a financial counselor so they could get a more in-depth review of my situation, I remember sighing and rolling my eyes. I thought “Here we go again...” But to my surprise, this time it was different.

My counselor, Daniel, was pleasant right from the start. We spoke of my circumstances in detail. We explored options that could benefit me. He went to great lengths to help me decide which things I could cut out of my budget and to identify the others that were critical to my family’s survival. We broke it all down to the dollar. He gave me insight to GreenPath’s Debt Management Program and educated me about how it worked. He spent a lot of time answering all my questions with patience and knowledge, never once getting pushy with a sign-up pitch, as all of the other companies had. I tried to relay the message to him that this was the probably the scariest time in my life and that I need time to think things through, to make sure this program was right for me. He completely understood and told me to take all the time I needed.

During decision-making week, I received numerous phone calls from the other companies. They were aggressive in their tactics and tried, very hard, to get me signed up to their programs. One of the companies called me nonstop for weeks, aggressively threatening that “this was the only way I could make it financially.” I never heard from Daniel . . . except when I called him with a question — and he always had a kind and informative answer.

This was a time in my life when I had never felt so alone. I felt uneducated. I didn’t know what to do next. But speaking with Daniel helped me focus on what needed to be done today, for a better tomorrow. He informed and educated me about all of my available options, guiding me with patience and knowledge that was just impeccable. And I can’t tell you how much I appreciated his compassion and constant reassurance.

My GreenPath Debt Management Program is well on its way now and I expect to be debt free and on a new financial path within the next 24 months.
