Ask the ExpertCredit Counseling Is there a fee for your debt management program? Other companies say their services are free.
Your consultation and debt counseling session are free. If you elect to establish a debt management program, there is a one-time setup fee ($0 to $50 based on state of residency) and a reasonable monthly fee that also varies by state, but will never exceed $50.
Be careful when you see promotions for a "free" debt management program. Some companies charge a "voluntary" contribution, and some even keep your first month's deposit. If you find one that really is free, you may get what you pay for — poor service and headaches.

What is the difference between credit counseling and debt consolidation? The ads all sound similar.
When a mortgage or finance company uses the term "debt consolidation" they are referring to a loan --- with interest of course. This is usually a home equity loan that can be used to pay off credit cards. This actually increases your debt instead of reducing it. "Debt consolidation" in the credit counseling world refers to the strategy of consolidating all your creditor payments into one periodic deposit to us, which we use to pay your creditors on your behalf.
