In order to file a Chapter 7 or 13 bankruptcy, you are required to complete bankruptcy counseling from an agency approved by the U.S. Department of Justice.  GreenPath is approved to provide bankruptcy counseling and the certificate required to file for bankruptcy.  We are also approved to provide the bankruptcy education course necessary and the certificate required to discharge your debts.  These bankruptcy counseling and education services are available at

How much does it cost for bankruptcy counseling and bankruptcy education?
The services may be free or cost up to $50 depending on your financial situation and whether you receive services online, by phone or in-person.

How much time does it take to complete bankruptcy counseling and bankruptcy education?
Plan on about one hour for the bankruptcy counseling session, which is required to file for bankruptcy.  Debtors must spend a total of two hours completing the bankruptcy education course, which is required to discharge debts through bankruptcy.  This time requirement is mandated by the U.S. Department of Justice.  However, you may start and stop the course as many times as you like, and your progress will be saved.

Does GreenPath have attorneys on staff to help me file for bankruptcy?
No, GreenPath cannot practice law or assist consumers in filing for bankruptcy.

Will GreenPath tell me if I should file for bankruptcy?
No, GreenPath counselors are not attorneys and are not permitted to give legal advice.  We are an impartial educational resource to help you make an informed decision.

How long will it take for me to receive my bankruptcy counseling certificate or bankruptcy education certificate?
You will receive your certificate electronically within minutes of completing your session or course.
