National nonprofit organization will utilize housing counseling grants to help people obtain and retain the American dream

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (October 11, 2019)GreenPath Financial Wellness, a national nonprofit organization that provides financial counseling, education and products to empower people to lead financially healthy lives, has been awarded $2.1 million in housing counseling grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HUD awarded $42.8 million in grants in total to help approximately one million Americans make more informed housing choices, keep their current homes, or receive assistance to help them avoid foreclosure. GreenPath was among nine Michigan organizational recipients, was the largest grant recipient in Michigan, and received preference for qualified activities within a designated Opportunity Zone.

“GreenPath is very grateful for this support from HUD that will help our housing counselors provide tools and information to help people navigate the complexity around homeownership, make informed financial decisions and withstand future financial challenges,” said Kristen Holt, CEO, GreenPath. “We believe that everyone should have a place to call home.”

GreenPath and its affiliates provide support to homeowners to enable them to successfully stay in their homes and maintain their mortgages by improving their overall financial health. The nonprofit’s housing services include pre-purchase, reverse mortgage, foreclosure prevention counseling and post-modification financial coaching. GreenPath works closely with credit union partners, lenders and mortgage services, employers as well as federal agencies and Government-Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) to provide responsive services for people. Housing counseling grants like these make this work possible.

In March 2019, GreenPath affiliated with Clarifi, a nonprofit credit counseling and housing organization based in Philadelphia, Pa. In June 2018, GreenPath affiliated with Homeownership Preservation Foundation (HPF), a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. Together, GreenPath, Clarifi and HPF use shared services and resources to guide people to sustainable homeownership, help people reduce debt, improve credit, save money, buy and remain in their homes.

In 2018, GreenPath clients paid off more than $216 million in consumer debt through a GreenPath Debt Management Plan (DMP). GreenPath served over 200,000 households and supported more than 57,000 households through a DMP.
